  • Review: Das Blum Restaurant, Innsbruck, Austria

In a city surrounded by towering Alpine peaks and with its culinary traditions steeped in hearty meat and cheese, Das Blum stands out as a refreshing alternative. This vegetarian restaurant in Innsbruck showcases the humble vegetable as a star performer. With a modern philosophy rooted in sustainability, locality and creativity, read on to discover why we recommend a visit to Das Blum to discover what vegetarian dining can be.

    The food

The menu is all in German but thanks to a combination of our waitress having a degree in English, and using Google Gemini to aid with translation, we were able to make informed choices.

We opted for the sharing menu and began proceedings with some bread and a lovely chutney but I can’t for the life of me remember what was in it… aubergine, maybe? All I do remember was that it was extremely tasty!

  • Review: Lichtblick, Innsbruck, Austria

Perched on the top floor of the bustling RathausGalerien shopping centre, Lichtblick is a café by day and a restaurant by night. With panoramic views of Innsbruck’s rooftops and the surrounding Alps, this seventh-floor haven is aptly named: a “ray of light” illuminating the city’s dining scene.

    The food

Lichtblick’s cuisine combines Austrian tradition with Mediterranean charm and a hint of Asian intrigue, and had moved to a new menu the night before our visit. In fact, diners can select from three thoughtfully curated menus where each course is designed to complement one another, but you may substitute courses from other menus if you wish (as you’ll see we did with the dessert from menu 1).

We primarily opted for menus 2 and 3, and I’m going to let the pictures doing the talking here…

    Menu 1

Poached wild-caught prawns with sweet potatoes, baby chard,

  • 6 reasons why Kuching should be on your travel radar

Kuching represents the beating heart of Malaysian Borneo, the fusion of cultural richness, intriguing local cuisine and seemingly never ending lush landscapes; they combine to create somewhere that once you’ve visited, you’ll be sure to return. Well, that’s exactly how we felt after our first ever trip to the capital of Sarawak, our maiden Kuching vacation will certainly not be the last time we experience this enchanting corner of Malaysian Borneo. We checked into the newest luxury hotel in the city centre, before heading to the coast to spend time at a simply stunning boutique resort. In between exploring the old town and soaking up the coastal vibes, we squeezed in a round of ‘jungle golf’, checked out the largest museum in Malaysia and marvelled at the untamed wilderness of Bako National Park. Of course, for those of you that know us well, we made sure to enjoy some of

  • Bob rafting at Igls, Innsbruck – what to expect

Nestled amidst the postcard-perfect scenery of the Tyrolean Alps, Igls is more than just an escape for nature lovers — it’s also a haven for adrenaline junkies. At Heilgwasserwiese 1, at the foot of the Patscherkofel mountain and the home of Innsbruck’s Olympic bobsleigh track, a new experience awaits us – bob rafting!

Think of it as bobsleigh for beginners with absolutely no prior experience required; you sit in a padded ‘raft’ and are pushed down the 1,270 metre downhill ice track – the same one the bobsleighs use. It was constructed for the 1976 Winter Olympics and is the only artificial ice bobsleigh run in Austria.

Our experience began at building K14, conveniently located near the bobsleigh car park, where there’s also a café. Here we checked in and were provided with lightweight balaclavas to wear under our helmets. A little nervous laughter filled the air as

  • Bouldering at K1 Climbing Centre in Innsbruck – what to expect

Innsbruck has long been a haven for adventurers. With its history steeped in mountaineering, this city breathes a culture of climbing in addition to many other outdoor pursuits. From simple bouldering opportunities to the limestone cliffs of the Karwendel, Innsbruck offers a vertical playground for climbers of all abilities. Whilst we’ve done a little climbing in the past, we’re very much beginners so we were happy to find ourselves at the K1 Climbing Centre, ready to test our skills with some low-level bouldering.

Having opened in May 2017, the K1 Climbing Centre is a modern purpose-built centre with a spacious interior. With walls reaching up to 17 metres, the centre caters for a whole range of abilities.

Thankfully, we were bouldering at low levels so all we needed was climbing shoes – no ropes or harnesses, just us, the wall and gravity… and crucially

  • Review: Dorp Hotel, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa

As it celebrates its fifth anniversary, Dorp (Afrikaans for village) has maintained a rather low profile, as is often the case with certain hidden gems. Following the development of a loyal following and significant features in international magazines, the name is now heard more frequently – and, as I discovered over two visits, for good reason.

    The welcome

A year after my first visit, I once again stepped through the doors, and the same staff warmly greeted me – impressively remembering me from my previous stay. There are handshakes and even a few hugs as I walk through the hotel. As I enter my cottage, the entrance table bears a welcome note signed from “your Dorp family,” rather than “the Dorp family.”

This subtle pronoun change reflects the Dorp ethos. It conveys the ‘welcome home’ sentiment that many hotels claim but struggle to deliver. Knowing it was a special

  • Bergisel Ski Jump – what to expect

Rising above Innsbruck – and often said to look like a cobra from afar – the Bergisel Ski Jump is more than a monument to sport — it’s a place where history and adrenaline collide. And ski jumping in Austria couldn’t be at a more pivotal moment. Just days before our visit to Bergisel Ski Jump, Daniel Tschofenig came from behind in the prestigious Four Hills Tournament to complete an Austrian 1-2-3 on home snow.

We set out to explore this iconic venue on a crisp morning, having skipped the hotel breakfast. Catching tram 1 to Bergisel, we walked to the ski jump where the funicular whisked us up the hillside, followed by a lift to Bergisel Sky, a glassy vantage point perched high above the city.

The views from this sleek look-out are breathtaking—in the foreground, the skip jump and a panorama of the city beyond, against

  • How To Plan A Perfect City Day Trip

Heading to one of the biggest cities in the world can be fantastic. Paris, London, Tokyo, Rome, New York, Los Angeles, all of these are wonderful and deserve our attention. Of course, in some cases it’s also worth doing our best to support the local economy even in big cities, such as donating to the Los Angeles firefighting fund that intends to help people recover from some of the damage done by recent wildfires.

It doesn’t really matter if you’re heading to a city for a long-term stay, or just traveling in from elsewhere for a day experience. Either way, doing what you can to see the highlights and to have your own comforting experience of such a busy and active place takes skill.

Don’t worry though, because in this post we intend to help you perfect your day trip and potentially avoid some of the frustrations that come in
